Children’s University was officially established with the Official Gazette announcement dated January 30, 2012 and numbered 28189.
We aim to help children gain scientific and original thinking, to create an environment that will enable children to understand science and scientific issues and to create productive prospective scientists by involving children in more advanced research.
General Information
What is the Children’s University?
Children’s University offers an environment that allows children to discover happiness. In such an environment, it is aimed to develop science, art and sports activities, to develop hand skills, to develop mental skills, to gain responsibility for working with the group, to make learning fun, to provide scientific communication and social communication skills, to create interest in science and career awareness.
Children’s University in the World
The first children’s university was founded in 2002 in Tübingen (EUCU.NET, 2010). The EUCU.NET project, supported by the European Union 7th Framework Program (FP7), calls for Science in Society, is supported by the European Children’s Universities Network. In this context, it is stated that Children’s University programs make great contributions to the diversity and richness of individuals and societies and help to eliminate some prejudices and stereotypes.
The slogan of the European Network of Children’s Universities is as follows:
“Every child expects to be explored with an extraordinary learning capacity and unique abilities.”
In the early 2000s, children’s universities were established in the campuses of some universities in America and Europe. Although not a single model for children’s universities, the common goal of all is to introduce children to science at an early age, helping them identify areas where they can maximize their potential.
There are 6 different models evaluated in the studies of the Children’s University, which carried out studies in 95 countries around the world.
There are 6 different concepts in children universities.
– Presentation centered lessons that conducted in lecture hall.
– Activity supported lessons that conducted in lecture hall.
– Practice based lessons that conducted in the form of workshop.
– Practice based science camps when conducted holidays.
– A specific discipline application modules that performed throughout the year.
– Different disciplines application modules that performed throughout the year.
The nature of the program to be carried out, children’s age group and according to the conditions of these models can be preferred. While the content of the programs carried out within the scope of the Children’s University, different methods are applied by the countries. However, there are efforts to construct the Children’s University programs in a common way in the studies carried out under the EUCU.NET (European Children’s Universities Network).
From the earliest age possible, all children should have the chance to be in touch with academic thinking, to engage with scientists, artists, practitioners, researchers, students and research institutions. It is children university shared responsibility to make children and young people, whatever their background, aware of their educational opportunities and to support them to realise their potential. They should be inspired and empowered to recognise their strengths, their value and power for society as researchers, students, practitioners, artists, scientists and thinkers for the future. A children university means, encouraging children to be curious and to think critically – the mainsprings of research and science, communicating to them the idea of universities and providing insights into academic culture as well as their role in the society at large, working with young people in such a way as to help universities to be more responsive and open, making encounters between children and “the university” (as a community of academic staff and students) possible, enthralling them with diverse scientific fields (from humanities, to social sciences and natural sciences) and with diverse scientific methods unbiased by commercial interest and giving young people an understanding of their future educational choice and options.
Children’s University is based on the aims of;
– Providing access for all children without boundaries and on a voluntary basis,
– Involving and providing benefi t for children from disadvantaged groups (including barriers caused by social or economic, impairment, language or gender),
– Providing an atmosphere of respect without pressure to perform,
– Contributing to the enhancement of universities as concerning organisational, didactical and research development.
